Pack Like a Pro

I HATE packing!!! It never fails, I swear! Something essential always gets left behind; hang up clothes, makeup, comfortable shoes, my camera, medication, etc…  Just last weekend I took a trip and forgot my toothbrush, and deodorant. Can I just say, bad packing can cut into your social life 😉.

I used to think I hated traveling but I now realize I LOVE exploring, experiencing, and exiting the mundane, it’s the packing that I loathe!

A few years ago, my future son-in-law, Jay, asked if I would fly to San Diego to witness his proposal to my daughter. I had never traveled on a plane all by myself so it felt daring and empowering. I immediately said, “yes,” packed my big girl panties and headed out the door.

Once I arrived at the airport it felt like a foreign land. I didn’t even know how to work the ticket kiosk.  The terminal was bustling with travelers, all who seemed to know exactly what they were doing and where they were going. After muddling my way through the check-in process I made it to the TSA line.

I held it together pretty well until the TSA officer grabbed my shoes and pushed me to the side to await further instruction. With my bottom lip quivering and tears welling up I texted, “Jay, I am so scared, I can’t even make it through the check in gate. I’ve never travelled alone! I should have stayed at home! #badidea!”

I felt weak and powerless.

Then Jay texted. “Mom! You’ve got this! You have done way harder things than this. You are a single parent of four amazing kids and you wear so many hats AND you do it well. You are so brave, this is nothing! You can do this!”

At that moment I looked up and saw my reflection in the window and I promise it looked like a cape was blowing behind me. My heart was full and my chest puffed up with courage. The TSA officer handed me back my shoes and motioned me on through the line.

Since that day I have continued to travel. I now check-in online before getting to the airport and I download my ticket onto my i-Phone.  if I would just figure out this whole packing thing I could rule the world! LOL

Now that I have a sweet little grand baby who lives out of town I did some research on how to pack like a pro.  I’ll be ready for my next visit.

There are several types of packing, some people swear by the “rolling” method of packing and some swear by the “cube” method of packing.  I will provide you links to both types and let you be the judge.

While there are hundreds of packing videos out there these were some of my favorites.

So, whatever happened to that scared, timid traveler I used to know? I’m happy to say, she has left the building, or should I say, the terminal.  In the near future I will be jumping on a plane to visit my daughter and her sweet family (yes, all by myself), AND I have a conference to fly to after that (all by myself).

I will probably always be a little anxious to fly alone BUT I am learning to stay calm and blend in with all the other solo travelers. There’s a big beautiful world out there just waiting to be discovered!

Come fly with me,

Excellent advice on packing. Let bed the videos.
Trying to navigate an airport can be very intimidating. It is important to keep informed of the TSA rules to eliminate any delays in getting through the checkpoints.
My scariest traveling experience was leaving Santiago, Chile. I was pulled aside for a random check before boarding the plane. I thought I was going to be left in a foreign country not knowing the language and my family traveling companions going home without me. 😱
Well, after an English speaking person explained the random check routine, I felt better and was reassured I would be joining my family on the plane.

Ugh. Auto correct didn’t correct. “Let bed the videos” should be “Loved the videos.” 🤦‍♀️

      Betty,

Oh my goodness! I’ll have to work up to international travel, not for the faint of heart. Glad you made it back!
