Fast Tips For A Clean Bedroom Tonight!


Several weeks ago, I was in a home store. As expected, all the flip-flops, beach towels, patio furniture, and bug spray were on sale because it was August. Totally expected.


What I did NOT expect to see was fall décor, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and multiple aisles of Christmas – all in the same section, and the cutest little North Pole sign that said,


“16 weeks until Christmas!”


 I immediately began feeling anxious. Like, that feeling you get when you go on vacation and realize none of your shorts fit, and your swimming suit has a hole in the knee… yeah, that kind of anxious.


When I got home, I started thinking of ways I could be better prepared this year and actually enjoy the holiday season.


The first thing that came to mind was my home. I absolutely LOVE having people over, but I don’t like having to apologize for a bunch of clutter. I’m an emptynester now, so I can’t pin the mess on my kids any more.


So, I figure the bedroom is the perfect place to start. We all need a place of peace and tranquility. It’s also the first thing we see when we wake up and the last thing we see before going to bed. Why do we use our most personal space as a catchall?


For example, do you know where your nightstand is…OR…is it hidden under a pile of mismatched socks, expired mail, dirty coffee mugs, and a copy of The Purpose Driven Life?


It’s no wonder we have trouble sleeping!


The best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. If we start now, there’s plenty of time to get ready for holiday guests. So, this week let’s just concentrate on the bedroom.


I found the COOLEST resource for this.  Melissa Maker, from shows us how to tackle the bedroom by using the three-step “wave” method for cleaning.



3 – Step Wave Cleaning

  1. Declutter
    1. Throw away trash
    2. Anything that does NOT belong in the bedroom gets put in a container and out of the room
    3. Make bed
    4. Organize dresser/nightstand
    5. Fold and put away clothing


  1. Dust
    1. Work from top to bottom


  1. Vacuum


This is just a quick punch-list of her tutorial but go ahead and watch the video above in its entirety. There are a lot of great tips.


One suggestion Melissa makes is that we only display 3 – 5 items at most on our dressers.  I’d love to see your before and after pictures of this…and here are mine:

  1. Clean your room from Top to Bottom & Left to Right
  2. Have all your cleaning supplies with you
  3. Dwell time – let products sit or dwell before wiping off
  4. Start with your most gentle products first
  5. The eye level test
  6. Use the “S” pattern when wiping surfaces
  7. Parallel and perpendicular


If you are like me and you have clothing that has been worn, but is not exactly ready for the wash, Clean My Space also has a DIY fabric refresher.  You can spritz it on that sweater you wore to dinner last night at Jack’s Smoke Shack.


I spent about twenty minutes weeding through my messy jewelry stand. I collected all the jewelry I no longer wear and I am gifting it to my friend who uses beads to make Christmas ornaments.
