What’s in Your Closet

Unless you have been living under a rock the past few weeks you can’t help but notice the slight smell of cocoa butter and chlorine lingering in the air, beach towels and flip-flops on every aisle of the store and it takes less time to get across town because school buses are parked for the next three months. This can only mean one thing, SUMMERTIME!!!! Woot!!

I know a lot of people make New Year’s Resolutions in January but I like to re-evaluate my life goals at the beginning of summer. The days seem longer, the weather allows us to be more active, flowers bloom, trees leaf out, pallets of color burst across the sky, lawns, gardens, patios and life just seems worth living again! I get goosebumps just thinking about it.

Summer is the Friday night of seasons, it holds such promise! Anywho, you’re probably wondering “what does summer have to do with my closet?” To which I reply, EVERYTHING! Here, let me tell you a story

Nowadays just about every office has one, a cute little millennial (CLM for short). Awhile back, when I worked at the bank, our CLM showed up one day wearing a sharp outfit. I asked if it was new. Tossing her ginger locks, she giggled and said “It’s just a little something I found in the back of my closet.”

The next day she showed up with another smart ensemble which she apparently found “in the back of her closet.” This went on for a whole week. Each outfit more stunning and pulled together than the day before. That got me to thinking…

So, the following Monday I decided I would pull outfits from the back of my closet to see if I too could freshen up my look, you know, take my wardrobe “to the next level.” That’s millennial talk for mix things up or try something new. The rule was, each day I would reach into the back of my closet and had to wear the first thing my hand touched.

I soon realized this fashion hack was not for everyone.

Here’s how it went down:

Monday: I wore a pink taffeta dress from my junior prom (the theme that year was “Can’t Fight this Feeling” By REO Speedwagon).

Tuesday: A maternity dress with shoulder pads and a big white collar (remember the ones we made out of linen and lace place mats from Hobby Lobby?).

Wednesday: a Hawaiian shirt (It was my uniform when I worked at a water park one summer. I keep it around for Halloween or various luau parties).

But on Thursday my boss called me into his office and said, “Okay, Kathy, I’m willing to compromise…you can keep the band uniform on but you’ve got to lose the plume, it’s distracting the customers.”

****DISCLAIMER: All my stories are true according to how “I” remember them to be 😉****

So, what’s the moral to the story? Our closets should not be time capsules.

Do you ever open up your closet and just see chaos? Girl, I do! They say we wear 20% of our clothing 80% of the time. Talk about a lot of junk in your trunk!

That’s why this year my big, fat summer project is to organize my closet. I can’t even imagine the calm that would surely follow if I could open closet doors that reveal only items that are current, fit “today”, and are paired down and organized.

Okay, this is the fun part!!!! I LOVE finding fresh new resources to help us live our best life. For all things pretty, organized, decorating, etc… you HAVE to check out this link. Remember the name Sharrah Stevens-Robeson- Live Your Style (you heard it here first and you’re welcome!). She is a CLM, but she also features her mother on some of her videos/blogs

Yesterday, I started pulling things out of my closet and all I have to show for it is a HUGE mess! In case you can’t tell, I have a hard time staying focused and on task at times. That’s why I’ve decided to take one for the team and show you my daily progress (this is going to be humbling).

My closet. Day one.

First things first! Today I am pulling everything out of my closet, yes, I said EVERYTHING! I don’t think I’ve done this in 20 years.

Just like having kids or starting a new diet, it’s never going to be the perfect time so you just need to jump in!  For example, I have a group of women coming tonight for dinner so I will just shut the door to my bedroom (this will be my little secret). I’m not typically a super organized person, and I don’t have a huge closet, but I’m excited to create a space, sans chaos.  #demoday!

Question: Tell me about your closet. What do you like? What do you not like?

Oh, Kathy – I first snickered at your Monday outfit, and my husband asked what was funny. I proceeded to read aloud what you had written about your daily outfits. By the time I got to Wednesday’s outfit we were both giggling, and the band uniform on Thursday had both of us laughing uncontrollably and gasping for air. I’ve seen that band uniform, and could vividly picture you in the bank wearing it! 🤣🤣🤣 BTW, my closet looks just like yours. I’m starting today by tackling the shoes I never wear that I suspect have been breeding in the dark recesses of my closet. 😱👠👢👟👡

Hi Karhy, I started my closet cleaning a few years ago. After bagging up 40 plus (that’s right 40 plus) tops I ran out of energy. Hey today is a new day . Going to start again. I think I have bought maybe 23 new tops since the bagging spree. Here is the kicker. I believe I pulled only 3 tops back out of the original bags before I got them out of my house. Wishing everyone Good Luck

Oh…MY…WORD!!! 40 tops!!!! you could open your own boutique! LOL. Believe it or not, I purged a couple of years ago and then “Oops, I did it again.” I created another mess. Let’s dig ourselves out of this chaos together! Thank you for your comment, I hope all is well in the Ralstin casa!

We must be on a similar flight path because this has been on my mind a lot recently. Unlike you, I haven’t yet parachuted out of the plane! TY for spurring me on. I’ll be watching your progress and living vicariously!😂😂😂

Let’s do this together! the beauty of being an empty nester is we can totally trash our rooms (temporarily, for a greater good) you can sleep in your kids’ old rooms until the piles tone down lol.
